The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
