Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
